Totalitarian systems eventually face a "meltdown" when they lack balancing forces and rely on increasingly irrational aggression to maintain control. Social theory suggests that while aggression keeps people in their place, excessive or unfair violence can become a catalyst for revolution. Modern political persecutions and indictments are viewed as signs that the ruling class has become transparently tyrannical, potentially waking up the public.
