Kate Dally recounts the story of Anthony Johnson, a black man in the 1600s who successfully sued in court to keep another black man, John Cassor, as a slave for life. She argues that this legal precedent, set by a black master, was a key factor in the development of lifelong slavery in the colonies. Dally also credits white Quakers with establishing the Underground Railroad and fighting to change hearts and minds following the ratification of the Constitution.
