Inflation Indexing, Housing Exemptions and Social Security Taxes
Many tax provisions, such as the $250,000 housing exemption on capital gains, have not been indexed for inflation since 1997, effectively resulting in a hidden tax increase as property values rise. Similarly, Social Security benefits become taxable if a recipient earns more than $25,000, a threshold that has also remained stagnant for decades. Most states do not index their tax rates for inflation, further devaluing the income of the working class.
