Since the beginning of the pandemic, I pay attention to a metric I call ICU exit rate. That is the percentage of ICU patients out of the ICU within seven days. This has been quite stable over the waves until now.

20:19 and you can see a massive spike at the introduction of Omicron, meaning that there's a massive spike in the number of people that spend seven days or less in the hospital. So again, this isn't saying there are more people in the hospital, it's saying that if you're in the hospital, you're far, far more likely to be out and COVID free within seven days. So a huge spike in the number of people who get over Omicron very easily and don't have any side effects, you know, waylaying on. So that's one chart, gives you some information about COVID. Here's another one from Derek Thompson on Twitter. One of these is not like the other via Scott Gottlieb, MD. Seven day average of South Africa COVID statistics. In blue, you have new cases and each time a wave has occurred, this is the first wave, the alpha wave, if you will, you see a spike in hospitalizations followed by, or in new deaths or new cases, I should say, followed by a spike in new deaths.

Here's the Delta variant, you see a spike in cases and you see that the spike in deaths is not quite as prominent there since Delta maybe is as transmissible as the Alpha variant, but it's not as deadly. So that's reflected in this lack of, you know, spike in the death rate. This is Omicron. Over here, on the far right, a massive, huge spike in new cases, meaning it's very transmissible, but not a single change in the death rate. In other words, huge spike in cases, no resulting death waves.
